What is Flash?
Flash Technique – A Gentle Approach to Working with Trauma
Understanding trauma responses
Sometimes certain memories or experiences can feel difficult to think about, even long after they have happened.
You may notice that something small can trigger a strong reaction—such as anxiety, feeling overwhelmed, or a sense of being on edge. These responses can feel confusing, especially when you may not fully understand why they are happening.
These are not signs of weakness. They are often ways your mind and body have learned to protect you.

A gentle way of working
In counselling, there are different ways of working with trauma. One approach I may use, where appropriate, is the Flash Technique.
Flash is a gentle method that can help reduce the intensity of distress linked to difficult memories, without needing to go into detail or revisit the experience in depth.
This can feel reassuring for people who:
- Find talking about past experiences overwhelming
- Feel stuck with a memory that continues to affect them
- Would prefer a gradual and contained way of working
How Flash works
Flash works in a subtle way, allowing the mind to begin processing distressing material in the background.
You are not required to describe the memory in detail, and the focus remains on helping you feel safe and grounded throughout.
Some people find it surprising that change can begin without needing to revisit everything directly.

Working at your pace
Any work we do will always be at your pace.
We would talk together about whether this approach feels right for you, and you would always have choice and control over how we work.
Flash is just one of the approaches that can be used within counselling, and it may be integrated alongside other ways of working depending on your needs.
If you are feeling unsure about counselling, or worried about having to talk through everything in detail, it may help to know that there are gentle ways of approaching trauma.
